Foundations for a Workflow: Computer Basics

Living in a world where a seemingly limitless amount of information is available at the tips of your fingers and where new technologies and apps are being released around each corner with the promise of making your life easier and your work more effective, one would suspect that having a productive day at work should be easier than ever now. While there’s certainly some truth to that, incorporating these new technologies into our jobs and daily routines isn’t always so simple.

The best place to start with improving your workflow is, of course, with the basics:

First things first is getting to know your computer. I would suggest checking out some of these free tutorials offered by David Cox. With so many updates coming out it can be easy for new basic features to slip in without ever being utilized.

It’s also important to know how to use shortcuts on your computer. While implementing these may seem a little choppy at first, practice makes progress and learning shortcuts and gestures is a sure way of improving your workflow on your computer.

Remember to be patient with yourself as you begin using these new skills. Even if it’s just for a few short minutes each day, practicing and refreshing yourself on these skills is necessary if you want to get the most out of your computer. A tool is only as useful as the knowledge and knowhow behind the person using it and it’s these basic skills which will act as a foundation for creating a more productive relationship with your computer.

Next week we will begin looking at useful apps for both you and your business.
